Quake, the influential first-person shooter from id Software, celebrated its 20th anniversary on Wednesday. In recognition of the occasion, director and designer John Romero published a Quake FAQ that was created on October 22, 1995, that served as a repository for all things Quake up to that point.
Romero notes on his blog that the FAQ, dubbed Quaketalk 95, was created by Joost Shuur to keep people up to date on everything that had been posted about the game. This includes random tidbits that had been published in magazines as well as discussions in IRC chats and more.
One month after Quaketalk 95, Romero notes, the company held a big meeting that ultimately determined the final direction of the game that launched the following year.
On August 3, 1995, Romero released the first screenshots of Quake on the Internet. His blog post includes the full collection of images as well as the text that accompanied those 320 x 200 resolution screens caps. The post also includes a set of trading cards that someone made.
If you were a fan of Quake back in the day (or even now), the Quaketalk 95 FAQ will certainly induce that warm and fuzzy feeling associated with nostalgia. Quake arrived a few years before I made the jump to PC gaming but I'm sure some of you will appreciate Romero and Shuur's contributions.
In related news, id Software is working on a brand new Quake game. Unveiled at E3 2016, Quake Champions is described as a competitive multiplayer arena shooter. The teaser trailer below will have to hold you over until more details arrive at QuakeCon in August.
