What just happened? The Epic Games Store has debuted on iPhone within the European Union and Android devices worldwide. The launch marks a new chapter in the ongoing battle for a more open and competitive digital marketplace, driven by Epic's desire to break the duopoly of Apple and Google.
The mobile store launch comes with a trio of multiplayer games – Fortnite, Rocket League Sideswipe, and the debut of a mobile-optimized Fall Guys.
These games are now available globally through the Epic Games Store on Android. The iPhone version of the store is only accessible in the EU for now, thanks to the regulatory framework provided by the Digital Markets Act.
The act, designed to foster competition and innovation in the digital space, has opened the door for this shift but is only enforceable in the European Union.
Epic Games founder and CEO Tim Sweeney expressed enthusiasm and determination regarding the EGS mobile launch and its future.
"The tide is turning, and the mobile ecosystem is finally opening up to competition," Sweeney said, underscoring the broader implications of this launch. "The fight is far from over, but this is tangible progress for developers and consumers who can begin to benefit from competition and choice."
The move is not just about bringing games to mobile devices but about challenging the restrictive practices of Apple and Google, which Epic Games argues stifle competition and consumer choice.
Despite this victory, accessing the Epic Games Store on mobile devices is still challenging. Apple and Google have implemented cumbersome installation processes with multiple steps, confusing settings, and "scary" security warnings that may deter less tech-savvy users.
Epic Games acknowledges these hurdles and reaffirms its commitment to fighting these anticompetitive practices in courts and through continued lobbying of regulatory authorities.
In addition to EGS mobile, Epic is expanding its reach through third-party app stores. Starting with AltStore PAL for iOS users in the European Union, Epic plans to launch its games on other independent platforms like Aptoide and ONE Store, further broadening access for mobile gamers.
The Epic Games Store rolling out on mobile devices represents an expansion of gaming options and a step towards a more open and competitive digital marketplace. The battle may be far from over, but this launch is a sign of tangible progress for Epic.
