The Switch that doesn’t switch is Nintendo’s best handheld yet.

The Nintendo Switch is a great portable console that you can fit into most pockets and provides the cheapest way to get into the Switch ecosystem, but it's let down by stripped-back features that make it incompatible with some Switch titles.

The Switch Lite is all about portable gaming, and it shows. It's lighter, more nimble and easier to play just about anywhere. It's the ideal option if you never plan to game on your TV. And for existing Switch owners, it's a compelling secondary system.

If you are that kind of person, you’ll be grabbing a device that fits snugly into Nintendo’s storied history with handheld gaming. In a world where everyone has a smartphone in their pocket and services like Apple Arcade make playing great games easier than ever, there’s still a place for a dedicated device that does one specific thing. And the Switch Lite does that one thing very well.

The Switch Lite is all about being a handheld; it's about being a second Switch for smaller bags, it's about being a sturdier, more bashable goggle box for kids. In all of these cases, it's the better device, but it makes a few too many small compromises on the way. If you know exactly what you want from your console though, the Nintendo Switch Lite could clearly be the better (and cheaper) console to pick up and enjoy Nintendo's latest and greatest.
