Valve is working on Project White Sands; everybody thinks it's Half-Life 3

Rumor mill: Half-Life 2 turns 20 this November. Fans have been screaming for Half-Life 3 for just about as long. Rumors have swirled off and on for years. Of course, every round of scuttlebutt has led to disappointment. So don't start holding your breath when I say Valve might be working on HL3. Now, go eat some salt.

The latest round of Half-Life 3 rumors seem to have started with a voice actor spilling the beans accidentally, followed by corroboration via data mining. However, it actually was the other way around, so we'll start chronologically.

According to data miner Tyler McVicker, work on the next Half-Life game started just after the release of the VR-only title Half-Life: Alyx in 2020, when references to a game called "HLX" began showing up in the Source 2 game engine code. Data miners, including McVicker, thought that the HL (Half-Life) plus the X could mean "Half-Life: Something" was in the works. Ideas that it could be Half-Life 3 were dismissed as "too good to be true." They reasoned that it was more likely just a feature of the game engine or was referring to another game that Valve was working on, like Deadlock.

As time progressed, strings found in Source 2 updates seemingly referring to elements in the Half-Life universe started appearing. Code mentions an "HEV suit" and "feral manhacks," both unquestionably linked to HL. Several strings also mentioned "Xen" creatures, like "Xengorillas, Xenjellyfish, and Xenswoopers." McVicker was becoming convinced that Valve was working on another Half-Life game, as Valve cut these Xen creatures from HL: Alyx but not from the Source engine.

He was hesitant to say anything publicly about it until he was sure, and then getting married earlier this year put him behind on his usual weekly data mining. It wasn't until an actress posted her resume to her website, mentioning working on a Valve production codenamed "Project White Sands," that he decided to reveal his findings (above).

"Almost everything you're about to hear is real, is not speculation, and comes directly from datamines of Valve's recent updates," McVicker said in the opening of his latest video. "Yes. Someone screwed up," he added, referring to the leaked resume.

McVicker notes that the evidence kept piling up, convincing him and others that Valve is developing another HL game. He is still sifting through months of updates to catch anything that adds to what he has already reported, and a more expository video is in the works.

As far as if it is Half-Life 3, he's a bit more hesitant. As fans have pointed out, White Sands is in New Mexico. The Black Mesa Research facility was also located in NM. The presumption is that Project White Sands refers directly to the original Half-Life games' setting.

However, McVicker points out that in past projects, Valve has used randomly vague codenames when hiring talent, presumably so it would be hard or impossible to link the codename to previous titles. For example, he points out that Left 4 Dead VR and Left 4 Dead 3 used the codename "Hodog." Even Half-Life: Alex went by "Project Jamiroquai." So McVicker is skeptical that Valve would associate the codename for HL3 to the earlier games so blatantly.

That said, leaks have become the new normal, almost like they are meant to act as pre-press releases. Some companies thrive and relish leaked information, allowing fans and the news cycle to generate hype before officially announcing their products. Using codenames like HLX and White Plains falls right into this new "accidental leak" philosophy. Furthermore, the actress in question removed the reference to Project White Sands after the news broke, adding to the hype by suggesting there is something to hide.

"Oops! Did I do that?"

Although her website is down right now due to "exceeding" bandwidth, someone grabbed a screenshot of the pertinent part of her resume and posted it on X before all mentions of White Sands were scrubbed from her entry (above).

Still, McVicker is hesitant to say the project is HL3 but thinks it probably is.

"I think this is a non-VR, Half-Life game [in which] you play a HEV Suit-wearing character in development at Valve Software that has been in development since Half-Life Alyx," he says without doubt. "Do I think this is Half-Life 3? [long pause] I gotta be very careful in answering that question. [long pause] But yes."

We shall see.

I really wouldn't trust much of what McVicker says. He's a crazed fan that says damn near anything. Remember when he was going on about the Index being 1000 dollars because it had secret Brain Computer Interface hardware in it?

If their management team has ANY sense at all they will respond by giving what their customers want .... just simple business logic ....

Couldn't care less. I really didn't care much for the direction the game took in Episode 2, in fact I found the game to be extremely boring and tedious. If they had put out Episode 3 (as they originally said they were going to do) and it went back towards the direction that Half-Life 2 and Episode 1 went I'd have been happy with the outcome.

Now that the franchise is pushing 20 years old I don't give a flip. I've got other games to pass the time with and the Half-Life series just isn't one of them. Though, I guess I'm probably in the minority here.

If I'm being honest here, I thoroughly enjoyed Blue Shift and Opposing Forces more than I did with Episode 1 and they blew Episode 2 out of the water. I'd rather replay those games over a possible Half-Life 3.

Half life has always been a showcase of new valve tech, kind of like crysis for crytek. Alyx was to showcase VR.
From what I've heard there actually is some new tech they want to showcase in Source engine.

So Half Life 3 actually might be happening if Valve needs a game to show off source engine again like people are saying, IMO.

FPS genre has been done to death that anything created based on past hits is bound to cause huge disappointments. High expectations and been-there-done-that are mostly to blame. There's only so much you can do to an already established genre.

Companies nowadays do not have the creativity or ingenuity to revolutionize games. Hence, they go back to creating sequels, or repainting old games in the name of "remakes" or "HD remakes". Plus, the zombie gamers are willing to buy any re-painted games, and not demanding creativity in new games.

Many sequels, in any genre, fell flat for the same reason.

Sometimes, it's best to leave the legends alone, and not try to milk anything from them. If needed, better play these original legends themselves, and re-experience what made them great in the first place.

And to add salt into the wound, I was never impressed with Half-Life 1. Yeah, I know - to most, that is blasphemy, but I'm sure there are many others who felt the same, though we are of the minority here.

Even at the time when it came out. I was there when the first demo was released and played it many times at the Cybercafe ( remember those?), and I even bought the full boxed game, just because I followed the hype. But I never really enjoyed it. I tried playing again and again to see what the hype was all about, and why it won so many awards, but nope. I couldn't enjoy it. I went back to playing other FPS at that time. Including DOS FPS games. But then again, I'm also the one who didn't enjoy Witcher III. Maybe I just don't like to follow the hype.

I enjoyed Duke Nukem 3D and played it to death, and still play it in Dosbox and 86Box. But Duke Nukem Forever is like... meh. Desperados Wanted Dead or Alive is one of my all-time favourites, but it's sequels Desperados 2 and Helldorado is like a smack on the fans' faces, (though Mimimi Games' Desperados III saved the franchise somewhat). And the list goes on and on.

I'll bite. About damn time. I'm nearing 60 years old. I would like to play Half-Life 3 before I die. LOL.

Im a HUGE HL fan, I literally replayed all the games like 300 times.. and sadly... your name is how I feel about this announcement thing. There is a point where if too much time have passed, even the die hard fans kind of stop caring about it. Voice actors have died, people were replaced (Alyx for example) cus they got too old. Im just not that excited about it anymore. Yeah, day 1 purchase and all but still. Your name.

Gaming market is pathetically saturated now. No title holds weight. dont care. another FPS.

even gta 6 is another *yawn*

Let's be real here. Valve will never release part 3 to any of their games.
But maybe we'll get 2.5, as we got with Alyx which was 1.5 + a bit of HL2 Part 2.1.

As a Quest 3 owner I would not be mad if they release an Alyx sequel which pushes VR games to the next level again.

Full voxel destruction sounds exciting to me. Have yet to see a triple A studio do something meaningful with it.
About time we stopped focusing on graphics and more on intelligent npcs and physics.

It's nice to dream... if it does come to fruition, hopefully they make it both desktop gaming and VR gaming. While I love VR and I liked Alyx, not releasing a desktop version really hurt their potential profit. Thankfully they allow mods, and the mod community has been awesome making a non-VR version of Alyx, and making a VR version of HL2! So we at least have to appreciate the fact that Valve still allows modding, which is really one of the best things about games after the game itself.

Can't recall an AAA game attempting to do something meaningful in this direction in god knows how long. It's so much easier just to "tell stories"....
