In a troubled story, a mother-daughter duo were forced to spend around four months in an Australian prison after authorities mistakenly identified tea as drugs. A little confusion cost the victims enormous suffering.

Here is their sordid story. Vun Pui “Connie” Chong and her daughter, San Yan Melanie Lim, imported 25kg of brown ginger tea to Australia this year. The duo intended to sell it at a premium price as the drink is a well-known remedy for period pain in Malaysia, which is their country of origin. They had also thought of making a profit of around $ 90 AUD.

But the misidentification of this package as amphetamine by the officials of the Australian Border Force (ABF), who had intercepted the packages of tea at the international airport led to the disappearance of all hopes of the duo.

Not only that, heavily armed police raided Chong and Lim’s home in southwest Sydney in January to arrest them. All of this happened despite the fact that authorities were made aware of problems with the tests used to identify the substance in the months that followed.

Biometric software and service provider Aware, Inc. announced that the Thomas County Sheriff’s Office in Georgia has installed the AwareABIS Automated Biometric Identification System (ABIS).

ABIS is designed for use by the civilian and law enforcement community and enables searches for fingerprints, fingerprints, latent prints and identity images, enabling analysis and Advanced forensic reports, while enabling data exchange with other regional and state law enforcement systems.

The addition of ABIS will help Thomas County officers identify potential suspects locally, no longer at the mercy of long delays in receiving an identity match.

The news comes after a June 2020 announcement that saw Aware partner with Iris ID to integrate the latter’s iris scanning hardware into the ABIS platform, expanding its capabilities.

With a flexible and modular architecture, ABIS is able to provide robust biometric search functionality such as facial or fingerprint scanning and processing when configured for law enforcement applications. For civilian applications, AwareABIS is capable of biometric search capabilities through APIs designed for ease of use, from visa applications to border control.

Regarding Tuam, he said: “I think what is most concentrated in the public is always the excavations, [and] DNA analysis. But there is so much in between and it is not addressed.

He said “individualization” would have to take place before DNA could be applied. He explained that this would involve separating the remains into individuals and identifying the age and sex of the remains.

“It would be very laborious,” he added. “It will take time because we have a lot of the same age groups. It will just take time.”

He said that after the site has been fully excavated, storage of the remains would be required during the process of placing the remains and identifying them.

SABINE PARISH – Authorities have announced a critical discovery in a cold Sabine Parish case that has been under investigation for 35 years.

According to a Tuesday night update from the Sabine Parish Sheriff’s Office, human remains found in a local well in 1986 have now been identified.

With the help of LSU Forensic Anthropology and Computer Enhancement Services (FACES), authorities were able to link the remains to a 58-year-old man from Grand Isle named Lester Rome, who was reported missing by Jefferson Parish authorities in 1984.

Two years after Rome’s disappearance, a landowner from the Sabine parish found the remains of human skeletons in a water well on his property.

At the time, although some of the skeletal remains were recovered, a positive identification could not be determined.

In October 2013, the FACES laboratory at LSU established a possible link with the remains of the well and Lester Rome.

The skeletal remains had shotgun pellets embedded in the pelvic region, implying that Rome had been wounded by the gunshot a few years before she vanished.

In December 2020, former DA investigator Ted Delacerda handed over several newspaper clippings and photographs of the case to the Sabine Parish Sheriff’s Office.

In February 2021, with permission from the current landowner, Sabine Parish Sheriff’s detectives attempted to recover other skeletal remains from the well by mechanical means, but were unsuccessful.

In April 2021, with the help of staff from the Central Sabine Fire Department Confined Space Entry Team, further skeletal remains and evidence were recovered inside the well.

On October 18, 2021, Dr Mark Holder, Coroner of Sabine Parish, issued a death certificate indicating that the skeletal remains recovered from the well were those of Lester Rome.

Officials say Rome’s next of kin have been notified.

Sabine Parish Sheriff’s detectives are still investigating the case and looking for more information that could lead to the person (s) responsible for Lester Rome’s death.
