I received the report of a proactive forensic audit of the 11-member City Mayor’s Committee (MayCo). I am happy to report that the report did not identify any significant risks or red flags.
I am satisfied that the verification was invasive enough to ensure that nothing could be easily hidden. Capetonians can be assured that our local government respects public money and expects the integrity of all members appointed to public office.
I am convinced that these lifestyle audits should become standard practice for politicians and senior civil servants across South Africa, at all levels of government. This is the only way to eradicate corruption and begin to restore public trust in government. Cape Town is proud to lead by example by doing so now, even if it is not mandatory. This underscores our zero tolerance approach to corruption in Cape Town. If and when this happens, it will be rooted out and punished without fear or favor.
The Proactive Lifestyle Audit was carried out by two independent firms: Fairbridges Wertheim Becker and FTI Consulting. She investigated 15 elements, which were predefined in her terms of reference. These include:
