The Kanaf center provides legal, psychological and social support to child victims of physical and sexual abuse

A senior committee has been set up to oversee Kanaf, a unique interdisciplinary, multi-agency child protection center. The center offers legal, psychological and social support to child victims of physical and sexual abuse.

The directive was issued by Sheikha Jawaher bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, wife of His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah and chairperson of the Supreme Council for Family Affairs (SCFA). It aims to support all legislation and laws relating to the protection and care of children to ensure that children grow up in a safe and nurturing environment.

In accordance with the directive, Hanadi Al Yafei, director of the Child Safety Department (CSD), will lead the senior committee.

Al Yafei said: “The Kanaf program is a historic initiative founded and supported by Sheikha Jawaher Al Qasimi to ensure the safety and well-being of children and bring together specialized entities in Sharjah under one umbrella. Kanaf will use local expertise and will build on the strengths of the child protection legislative ecosystem in Sharjah and the UAE to foster a comprehensive and resilient mechanism that supports and protects children.”

The CSD Director added: “Kanaf is the first entity of its kind in the UAE and the Arab world. It is a new operational structure aligned with the laws and legislative systems of the UAE and Sharjah. which places child protection and care at the forefront of its priorities and legislation.

The director of Al Yafei said that the directive to establish the Higher Committee of Kanaf paves the way for the start of the official launch phase of the project.

“We have studied global child protection models and developed Kanaf in accordance with the culture and values ​​of the Emirati community. Together with our partners, we will provide comprehensive protection to children who experience any form of abuse by putting implements the highest standards of support and protection and will position the project as an inspiring model that keeps children safe and well-being.”

Following the announcement of the Kanaf project in 2020, CSD held several meetings and workshops with partners from the first phase of the project to streamline processes for providing a wide range of care and protection services to children.

Senior committee members include Counselor Anwar Amin Al Harmoudi, Chief Prosecutor of Sharjah; Dr. Mohamed Obaid Al Kaabi, President of the Federal Magistrates Court of Sharjah; Major General Saif Al Zari Al Shamsi, Commander-in-Chief of Sharjah Police; and Afaf Ibrahim Al Marri, head of Sharjah’s social services department.

The senior committee also includes Dr. Fatima Muhammad Al Khumairi, head of the forensic medicine department at the Ministry of Justice; Dr. Safia Al Khaja, Director of Al Qassimi Women’s and Children’s Hospital; Modhi Al Shamsi, Chairman of the Department of Family Development Centers; and Dr Hessa Al Kaabi, head of the child protection unit at the Emirates Schools Establishment.
